Searching for a job is not a pleasant experience. From filling out handfuls of applications to constantly tinkering your resume so it fits with the job you are applying for; it can be exhausting and arduous. What makes it even more stressful is that you are often going through it alone – without anyone to guide your efforts and assist you in the process.
Enter the job recruiter. There are many misconceptions regarding recruiters, but in reality, they can serve as a powerful tool in helping you find the right job and building your career.
What do recruiters do?
There are several different types of recruiters. Some work internally for the actual organizations looking to hire candidates, others work for staffing agencies that are hired by organizations to find candidates. But in general, recruiters work to find and incentivize top talent to work with a particular employer.
So that then begs the question, how exactly does a recruiter help you find and land the job you want?
1. Review resumes and cover letters
Perhaps one of the most common ways a recruiter can assist you in getting the job you want is by reviewing your resume and cover letter.
A good recruiter is not just looking for typos and poor grammar. He or she will also make suggestions on how to format the layout of the information in your resume and provide detailed insights into which skills and qualifications you should highlight to match the needs of the employer.
2. Interview preparation
If your resume and cover letter pass the smell test, you will be invited in for an interview. And while there is a lot you can do to prepare for job interviews, like practicing commonly asked questions, it is impossible to anticipate how each interviewer and employer will conduct their own interview process.
Because a recruiter is more intimately involved with the ins and outs of the employer, he or she can offer detailed insights into how you can better prepare. Further still, he or she may even offer to conduct a mock interview.
3. Salary and benefit negotiations
Negotiating a starting salary and your work benefits can feel like shooting in the dark. Without any basis or frame of reference on which to negotiate, you could be leaving lots of money off the table or proposing a sum that greatly exceeds the employer’s budget.
A recruiter will understand commons salaries in the industry, locality, and the company itself. Armed with that information, you will be in a stronger position to negotiate your job offer and compensation.
4. Access to a wide network
Another major advantage to working with recruiters is tapping into their vast professional network. Every day recruiters work to broker employment relationships between working professionals and employers. In so doing, they meet and work with lots of people.
You would be wise to leverage a recruiter’s vast network to help you connect with the right people and the right employers.
